Two major Malaysian corporations have joined forces to transform Carey Island into a thriving industrial and logistics hub, marking a significant step in the country’s economic development strategy. SD Guthrie Bhd and Sime Darby Property Bhd announced a partnership to develop up to 2,000 acres of land on the island, leveraging its strategic location near Port Klang and existing palm oil infrastructure. The collaboration, facilitated through a special purpose vehicle, aligns with both state and national initiatives to boost domestic investments and industrial growth.

The project will coexist with SD Guthrie’s extensive palm oil operations, which currently span 79% of Carey Island’s land area. These operations include processing facilities, research centers, and environmental conservation sites, alongside heritage buildings and protected mangrove ecosystems. By integrating industrial development with sustainable practices, the partners aim to create a balanced approach that preserves the island’s ecological and cultural assets while driving economic progress.

Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), the parent company of both firms, has expressed strong support for the venture, highlighting its potential to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a regional logistics leader. The development’s proximity to major ports and highways positions it as a competitive alternative to neighboring hubs in Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. With world-class infrastructure plans in place, Carey Island could attract global investors and enhance supply chain efficiency across Southeast Asia.

Officials from both companies emphasized the long-term vision behind the project, which includes job creation, economic diversification, and sustainable urban planning. Sime Darby Property’s leadership described the initiative as a “value multiplier” for businesses, communities, and the environment. As master planning begins, the collaboration signals a new chapter for Carey Island—one that merges industrial ambition with ecological responsibility while reinforcing Malaysia’s aspirations for regional economic leadership.
