A massive Chinese dredging vessel, the *Xin Hai Feng*, is playing a pivotal role in Malaysia’s Port Klang expansion project. Operated by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) Shanghai Dredging Co., the ship has been instrumental in deepening and widening berths CT10 to CT13 since its deployment in January 2025. With a hopper capacity of 16,888 cubic meters and a total power output of 25,643 kilowatts, it stands as one of the company’s most capable vessels.
The *Xin Hai Feng* is a trailing suction hopper dredger, a specialized ship designed to excavate sediment from seabeds and transport it for land reclamation or disposal. Its advanced capabilities have significantly accelerated progress at Westport, a key hub in Malaysia’s maritime trade network. The vessel’s crew, including engineers and deckhands, work around the clock to ensure smooth operations while maintaining onboard systems.
Beyond its technical specifications, the dredger also serves as a floating workplace and home for its crew. Daily life aboard includes routine maintenance, meal preparations, and even recreational activities like basketball on the deck. Chief engineer Cai Guohan and captain Song Bin oversee critical operations, ensuring the ship meets its project milestones efficiently.
The Port Klang expansion is expected to enhance Malaysia’s shipping capacity, reinforcing its position as a regional logistics hub. The *Xin Hai Feng*’s contributions highlight the growing role of Chinese engineering expertise in global infrastructure projects. As work continues, the vessel remains a symbol of both industrial capability and international collaboration in modern port development.
