Japanese retailer 3Coins is making its Hong Kong debut this July, capitalizing on the city’s weakened retail property market to bring affordable Japanese goods to local consumers. The Osaka-based chain will open its first outlet in Causeway Bay’s Hysan Place, offering a selection of household and grocery items through its partnership with Hong Kong distributor Yaichi Group.
With 365 locations across Japan since its 1994 founding, 3Coins sees Hong Kong as a strategic expansion point despite economic challenges. Yaichi co-founder Elmas Lou noted the city’s strong affinity for Japanese culture, describing Japan as a “hometown” for many Hongkongers. The distributor already represents popular Japanese brands like Tokyo Banana and Mr. Cheesecake in the region.
The move follows a growing trend of Japanese retailers thriving in Hong Kong, with chains like Don Don Donki and Muji establishing loyal customer bases. Jeannette Chan of JLL Hong Kong attributes this success to consistent demand for authentic Japanese products, which has encouraged further market entry.
Yaichi Group plans to introduce more Japanese brands to Hong Kong, responding to consumer preferences for quality imports. The company sees long-term potential in the market, even as economic conditions remain uncertain.
